HIPAA – Do I have to give a reason when calling in sick?

My coworker says that we don’t have to disclose the nature of the illness when we call in sick. Also, the supervisor isn’t supposed to ask because it’s a violation to do so. He says if falls under HIPAA. I searched the internet, but I couldn’t find anything specific. This is for the state of California. If someone has a link, that would be great.

Your employer has a right to ask you. If you feel disclosing the nature of your illness compromises your medical records or confidentiality of a condition, you can refuse to go into detail. ANd he can refuse to accept your reason and/or require a doctor’s slip.

“I have the flu”

“I have an upset stomach”

“My AIDS is flaring up”
“My herpes complex 25 is bad today”

C’mon people. THe guy is paying you; and you are asking them to pay you for time off. Let’s try “reaasonable”.
