Is it a HIPAA Violation to report on a closed medical account?
I had a medical account go into collections and was advised to pay the medical provider’s billing company rather than the collection agency as well as send them a letter stating that by paying off the account they must order the collection agency to destroy all records of my account with them since reporting on a paid account is a violation of HIPAA.
I did this and the medical provider refuses to tell the collection agency to remove my records. Was I misinformed? Is reporting on a closed account a violation?
For billing or payment purpose, HIPAA allows the disclosure (minimum) of the information.
