What happens to the nurse?

What happens to a nurse that violates HIPAA? Are there different types of violations with different consequences? If you don’t know where can i find this information? I need this for a college presentation!!! Please help!

Worst case scenario the RN can be fired. It really is going to depend on the institution, the actual occurrence ( what was said and to whom) and if it can be proven that it even happened. unfortunately hospital staff discuss patients in the hall way, elevator and cafeteria. I am not saying this is right. It just is real life. If information was provided to family/friends that should not have it then becomes a matter if the patient wished to complain. Google HIPAA for more recommendations.
