Is this a violation of HIPAA laws?
I had just lost my health insurance and needed to visit the doctor. I couln’t afford to pay and the account was sent to collections. The collections Agency sent me a bill for the amount that I owed; attached to the bill was a detailed bill of all of the tests I had to undergo and the cost for each. To my understanding releasing private information is a violation of HIPAA Laws, does anyone know more info about this?
I would contact an attorney – many have free consultations. If they are doing this, it needs to stop.
Regardless of what the law says, office clerks in a collection agency do not need this information and it should not go out of the insurance office.
The doctor is not at fault here, so I’d go for the insurance company.
