Has a “doctors excuse” become pointless?
I was thinking the other day, we arent allowed to give out ANY kind of patient info. We cant even tell if a patient is actually a patient at the practice, so what is the point of requesting a doctors excuse? If someone calls and asks if so and so had an appt there wouldnt it violate HIPAA rules to say yes?

Additional Details:

ok i must not have been clear in my question. I am a nurse so the question was coming from the other end. I was saying that if someone gets a doctors office, the school/employer couldnt call and verify it because we arent allowed to even say that the oatient was indeed at our practice. So arent we sort of going off of the honor system anyway?

I work in an urgent care, and I know most of our doctors excuses are in the note form and given to the patient to take to their supervisor.
