Is it a HIPAA violation to work as a intern as a medical biller or coder for experience?
I am a recent graduate of a medical biller and coder program at Allen School in New York, for experience I was wondering if it would be ethical to work in a volunteer capacity for the experience.
It is not a violation if you are an intern. As I believe you sign paperwork before you start that states you will follow HIPAA rules.
As a volunteer, however, you would not be able to do any coding. You can volunteer to work in medical records, doing filing, etc. but are not allowed to code.
