Billing Insurance when patient has none…HIPAA Violation?
I recently underwent a procedure, and I don’t have insurance. Many of the entities who are responsible for billing for different parts of this procedure (pathology, anesthesiology, lab) have billed some insurance company for my bills. Could this be a HIPAA violation? I have contacted these agencies and informed them that I don’t have insurance, but they continue to bill an outside source. What can I do about this?
How did they get the erroneous idea that you had that specific insurance? It must have been in your record there and provided by you at an earlier time. It is up to you to provide the correct billing and insurance (if any) information to them and to keep it current. Have you informed “these agencies” IN WRITING that you don’t have insurance and provided your correct address for direct billing?
