HIPPA ruling for medical coding and billing?

You are a biller for a women’s health organization. As you were submitting claims for the day, you come across a fifteen-year-old patient who received an abortion. As you read the details of the claim, you realize the patient is your best friend’s daughter. By law, the young woman does not have to tell her parents about the procedure. Under HIPAA, you are required not to disclose the information to her parents. What would you do in this situation? Would you want your best friend to know? Would you confront the daughter? Or would you keep it to yourself realizing you were breaking the law?

You keep it to yourself. Those laws were made for reasons JUST like this. HIPAA (not HIPPA) is designed to protect a patients privacy and they do, indeed, have the right to their privacy. The job of coder/biller forces you to see some things you probably don’t want to know about, but that IS the job and the rules have been laid forth and you had to know what they were prior to accepting the job. If you don’t like the rules, leave the job. But that is a privacy issue and should be left to be handled by the young lady that had to experience it.
