My doctor’s office said they can’t mail me a copy of my test results because of HIPAA,?
is this true or are they just being lazy?
That is them not being lazy. HIPAA stands for Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996. If they mail it, there is a chance that someone else could open your mail and get access to your medical records. If that happens, the doctor can lose his license and go to jail. It is always good to specify exactly how you want your results to be distributed. If you have signed a Privacy Document, then you can specify exactly how you want them to give you your test results. But I assure you that they are not being lazy. That is the office manager and the doctor doing their jobs.
