Does HIPAA Privacy Still Apply After Death?

Does HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) Privacy Still Apply After Death?
Is it breaking confidentiality to discuss a patient’s medical condition with those not involved in his/her care AFTER the person has died?
Is there a time frame where its okay? Months, maybe years?
I have checked several websites about this, and not one seems to discuss post mortem confidentiality. And I can’t seem to be able to get a clear answer from anyone at any medical facility I’ve worked at.

Please don’t copy and paste any links, unless they are definitive about deceased patient’s privacy rights.

Thank you.

My understanding is that patient privacy rights survive death under HIPAA and are administered by the legal executer if one has been named. Here’s a link to the World Privacy Forum, a nonprofit based in California: http://www.worldprivacyforum.org/hipaa/HipaaGuide7.html

You can probably contact them for more information: http://www.worldprivacyforum.org/aboutus.html
