Is HIPAA a joke, or what?
You can’t even call a hospital anymore and get patient condition information on a friend or relative, but I have been in may a doctor’s office and seen patient’s charts, billing info and other “confidential” paperwork left out or open on the receptionist’s desk or other public areas of the office.
HIPPA is no joke, but hard to enforce on a regular basis. I could get fired in violation of HIPPA standards if I got caught. If you think your doc’s office is doing a horrible job at keeping patient information confidential then you should report them!
In a hospital setting you can get information about the patient from the patient or if the patient allows you to. A nurse cannot share info without the patients permission (as long as the patient is compitent). Health care workers have no way to verify who you are via telephone (we can’t just take your word). We have no idea who is calling or what they might do with the information they are seeking. ..you just never know…
