what are the HIPAA regulations pertaining to email communications?
In what capacity? Can you email patient information? the answer is yes if the patient has signed a release of information and indicated in the release that he/she is okay with email communications.
Generally emailing your own in house colleagues on your own in house intranet using something other than patient names names is acceptable, ie “your two o clock cancelled”
However as no computer program or email program is safe from hacking one has to take a reasonable approach and decide what is reasonable. I have worked in Health Information for more than 20 years and my stand is always the same… why put your patient privacy at risk? Just avoid email
