Can hospital send bills to my employer?
Can hospital send my bills to my employer?
I hurt my back at work and have had 2 surgeries and several injections, I have finally gone back to work 4 hours per day 4 days a week. While I was at work one last week I went outside to get the mail and opened it there was an envelope from the hospital and in it was a bill from the hospital for one of my procedures. I went in to my boss’s office and she said she got some a few weeks ago that contained several bills, she also said that she forwards them to the insurance company. I am wondering why the hospital just isn’t sending the bills directly to the insurance? My friend said that the hospital should not be sending any of this to my employer and it is a HIPAA violation. I am very upset about this! Someone please help answer question.
No, they absolutely should not send it to your employer – I assume you gave them a home address. Call the billing dept of the hospital and ask for a supervisor. Perhaps someone simply input the incorrect address in the hospital computer system. Your friend is correct; that is a violation. And your HR person/boss should have let you know that bills were coming to the office.
