Pregnant…new job…new health insurance plan?

I have just started a new job about a month ago and just found out 3 days ago that I am 5 weeks pregnant. I just became eligible for health insurance through my job after completeing the 30 day mark. I was planning to sign up for the insurance regardless, but here is my question… I know HIPAA prevents pregnancy being considered a preexisting condition but as always, there are many loopholes. I have yet to see a doctor because I just found out, but definitely plan on going very soon. If I sign up on Monday for health insurance, then go to my doctor a week later where he confirms the pregnancy for the first time on record, do you think that would give me problems? I am only 5 weeks and will be about 6 or 7 at the first doctors appointment so it’s not like it’s that far fetched that I have been holding out on this “pre existing condition” until I got health insurance.

Any help is appreciated :)

I hope for your sake (and your baby’s of course) that you are covered without issues, but if they find a loophole to get out of paying (which is sad and sucks) they’ll still be able to do it even though you didn’t “know” b/c there will be documentation after the first u/s of how far along you are and the math just won’t add up know matter when you go to the doctor, it will be obvious you were pregnant b/f you signed up for the insurance. A lot of insurances (Cigna for example) pay for maternity no matter what from day one (I know b/c I have this) However, there are still companies such as Blue Cross/Blue Shield (whom I was previously with) that won’t cover you for 10 months after you sign up!!!! I really and sincerely hope your company uses one of the ones that will just cover you no questions asked despite the “pre-existing” condition issue!!! Best wishes and CONGRATS on your pregnancy!!
