Wellness Program Improvements?
Insurance administrator our self-insurance plan through my government employer. Criteria for an annual wellness award of $500 to each employee are: BMI 24.9; BP 120/80; LDL 140. The criteria seem too severe to me, excluding most employees from a benefit. I eat a healthy diet; hike 10-20 miles per week with vertical gain of 3,000-6,000 feet with a maximum altitude of 14,400 feet; commute 16 miles a day by bicycle for more than 2,500 miles a year; and starve myself each year to attain the BMI goal ~ am high-normal, failing the BP standard ~ LDL great ~ have a VOC among the top 10% of the United States citizens. EBMS rejects any AAF, except if written by their own biased physicians and offers no alternative to the criteria. Does this sound compliant with HIPAA? Do you know of a better Wellness Program (details)? How can I convince HR to adopt a better, more inclusive program to benefit more of my colleagues (and me)?
Yes, it’s compliant with HIPAA.
The point is, they’ve adopted standardized, written criteria, which will be accurate for 99.9% of the people they are being applied to. You cannot get an “individualized” criteria or consideration, without then violating the rights of the 99.9%, to ALSO get individualized, customized, non standardized “judgement call” evaluations.
It doesn’t matter that the majority of the employees don’t fit – seeing as how the majority of Americans are overweight or obese, that’s probably actually falling in line with national statistics.
