Is this considered a HIPAA violation?
A patient was in her room which was located directly across from the nurses station overheard the nurses talking about another patient on the floor presently who has HIV and the patient passed the info on to me when I entered her room.
Yes, but the patient was eavesdropping – I know, she couldn’t help it. Tell the nurses or a hospital administrator or the hospital ombudsman so this won’t happen again. Keep the information about the patient to yourself except when dealing with the “authorities” in this matter.
