Would anyone know about my rights as a tenant?
The rental office at my apartment complex is refusing to give me my payment history. I’m moving to a new home and my potential landlord wants a history on the rent that ive paid. The lady is telling me that HIPAA law in the state of new york prevents them from giving me my own personal information. Now if i’m not mistaken HIPAA stands for Health Insurance Portability And Accountability Act and has nothing to do with anything other than health insurance and medical records. Is she just an idiot who thinks she knows the law? Or is she right? How can I not have a right to my own information…..?
She is also saying that they won’t give the information to my new landlord either.
Well, I would not give it out either, as it is actually MY information from MY property.
Typically you give your new apartment a contact at the old apartment and they send your history directly from one office to the next.
