How do I apply for a HIPAA certificate?
I applied for insurance and they are requesting a HIPAA certificate that shows I have had 18 months of continuous insurance coverage. Where do I get it from?
You get the HIPAA certificate from your previous insurance company. They may have already sent you one automatically when that policy terminated, but you just didn’t realize what it was. Either way, they should be able to send you another copy fairly quickly.
If your previous policy hasn’t been cancelled yet, they won’t be able to send you a HIPAA certificate. (HIPAA certs are only issued when the policy is actually terminated.) However, they should be able to provide a simple letter that states you have current coverage that has been active for X number of years. Your new insurance company should be able to accept that for the time being, though they’ll likely want the official HIPAA cert when your other policy actually cancels.
