Doctor’s office full of people who are not HIPAA certified – illegal?
I have been working as a medical receptionist for over a year now. This is my first job in this field. I just learned last week that in order to work with patient’s personal information, you are supposed to be HIPAA certified – but I was not asked about certification at my interview, and upon talking to my coworkers, neither were they. NONE of us are certified and none of us knew we had to be in order to work here. Can our boss get in trouble for this or does it fall on our shoulders?
In my office we had to watch training videos and sign a waiver that we understood the HIPAA laws and if we were to violate those it was grounds for termination. We also have a training/update session each year. It is my understanding that they have to do these things.
