Military and Prescription Meds?
I am interested in joining the US Navy Nurse Corps upon graduating in a few years. However, I am currently on ritalin. I had taken ritalin all growing up, stopped in highschool, but am taking it again in college. As a testament to why I take ritalin, in college (with difficult classes) on ritalin I have achieved a 4.0, while in highschool achieving only a 3.3. I only take 5mg (1/2 tab of 10mg).
I believe I can function at the level expected of Navy Nurses, however, I understand having a history of prescription meds disqualifies one from joining.
Does the military have access to prescription history (which would be a HIPAA violation, but then again they are the government), or is it an honor system?
Could I conceivably lie?
I can’t see the military being in a position to turn someone down merely for being on a prescription med. How many people would they have had to pass on that were on prescription Zyrtec? Or on an asthma controller such as Advair? What about a woman who is on oral contraceptives? Those are prescription meds, as well. In a time when the DoD is having to send troops back to Iraq for a second, third, fourth deployment, can they really afford to turn down someone who was prescribed ritalin to treat ADD or ADHD?
I could see them passing on an applicant who has a neurological condition, or a convulsive disorder such as epilepsy (or even something like narcolepsy — where the patient can fall asleep at any random time).
