Hipaa Life Insurance

I have a question about patient privacy.?
I am 20yrs old and 11 weeks 3days pregnant and trying to schedule my first prenatal visit. The ob/gyn I have chosen since i got the approval from my health insurance today Is the same Doctors office my mother worked at and has friends that work there. Me and my mother do not have any contact by my choice as she was very abusive to me growing up. I do not want her to find out about my pregnancy. I feel it is my right. I do not want her involved in my life or my childs life and I do not want her to find out im pregnant and tell my family before I have a chance to.. How do i prevent this will the Hipaa act prevent them from “spreading My buisness”
Under HIPPA regulations EVERYONE in that office is sworn to the utmost confidentiality with the potential for SEVERE consequences if they break HIPPA regulations.
However, I know that my mother got ‘word of mouth’ information that I had gone to the local Planned Parenthood years ago when I was 17 years old. This was shortly before HIPPA went into effect, but confidentiality has always been held to the highest standards in healthcare.
Well, my mother being a nurse who worked at a few hospitals and several home health care agencies knew A LOT of nurses & Drs in our area…
Voice your concerns to the Dr, but don’t pinpoint anyone in particular.
It may come down to the Dr reminding his/her ENTIRE staff of the HIPPA regulations and the consequences that individuals AND the entire practice face in the event of a breech in Confidentiality.

By the way, I once worked in an OB/Gyn office where I was also a patient. It was office policy for those medical files to be specifically maintained in a secure cabinet within the Dr’s office and NOT with those files of the other patients. This is something to consider discussing with the Dr.
