How can I get the hospital to let me know if my Aunt is in there?

My aunt was in the hospital for complications with diabetes. The EMTs that took her there, suspected she’d tried to commit suicide (as do I, she has written out her obituary, and has mentioned a few times what songs she’d like played at her funeral). She’s in the same hospital that I work at, as a clerk in the mailroom. At first, she was in the med-surg unit, and I got to visit her between mail runs. Two days later, she was released, however, she didn’t go home. She lives with her sister, and no one has seen her. We’re thinking she was transferred to the behavioral health unit, because she said she was depressed when she was first admitted.

My aunt has not contacted anyone. Because of HIPAA, they can’t even tell me if she’s in there. I understand the need to protecting the privacy of patients, however, is there any way I can find out if she’s in there? I just really need to know she’s safe, not wandering the streets in a diabetic crisis somewhere.

if your aunt has requested to not be contacted or allow anyone to know where she is at then no, you cannot find out because that would be breaking the HIPAA laws
