Should I get the rabies vaccination?
I work in mental health and while on a home visit I was bitten by a dog. It was a pet and barely broke the skin. I went to the doctor that night and got a tetanus shot. Then two days later i got a call from the health department and couldn’t answer it. I tried to return the call but got no answer, the next day I got a letter reccomending I get the rabies vaccination. I talked to my work and they decided i could break HIPAA to report the dog’s location. I have been trying to do this, but have been unable to get in contact with the health department. It has been two weeks since the bite and the dog is still alive and well. Should I get the rabies vaccination?
Hi there,
You should continue trying to get in touch with the health department.
Is rabies endemic where you live?
Do you know whether this particular dog is up to date with vaccinations?
However, if the dog is still alive and well and not showing any signs of rabies after two whole weeks it is unlikely that the animal has the disease, and therefore unlikely he has passed it onto you.
However, I would always advise people to go and have a chat with a medical professional just to be on the safe side – you cannot take any chances with rabies!
I hope this helps, be safe out there!
