HIPAA violation, last name on pmt check – yes or no?
If you write the last name of a patient on the lower left/memo margin of a payment check (from the insurance company) to the medical provider, is it a HIPAA violation?
Specifically, if there is a last name written on the payment check from the insurer, that check goes to the provider’s bank, the check is cleared and sent back to the insurer… has any violation occurred within that whole process with the check being handled by the insurer, the provider, and the bank, then back to the insurer? The only information on the check being Total amount, payor, payee, and last name of patient? Thanks.
