Can colleges give out information about a student that has Multiple Sclerosis?
I have a friend thats going to college online for Medical assistant, and they told me that they were talking about different diseases and viruses, so he thought he could talk about having multiple sclerosis and that tests are still being done to role out if that is how someone could get MS in a class discussion. He told me that his school called him and said that this was brought to their attention and now they would have to disclose this to potental extern sites that the student may attending. I want to know does the school have the right to give out this kind of information to these sites? Does this violate HIPAA for giving out this information about my friend, and if the site would not take him because of this is it considered discrimination?
in these kinds of situations, the school may have offered a paper to your friend to be signed by him as an agreement that they will be publishing his story ( or something like that) or the extent of the information that can be released. this contract must also be notarized to see to it that both of the parties will embodied by the state law. however, your friend has the right to either agree, refuse, or to stop distributing the information anytime, unless the period of time is not specified in the contract.
