Questions about the life of a doctor…?
I want to become a doctor (not sure what specialty yet) but I don’t know too much about what their life is like.
For a General Practitioner working in the U.S.:
- do they take their work home with them? (or do HIPAA laws restrict that)
- do they get a lot of paperwork?
- about how much free time do they have?
- do they get vacation benefits or health insurance benefits?

Not so much, although they may be on call and have to take phone calls at home. Most work is done in the office.
- do they get a lot of paperwork?
OMG yes. And all that paperwork is work you do for free. Nobody reimburses you for filling out somebody’s disability form, or justifying to an insurance company why you prescribed a particular medicine.
- about how much free time do they have?
Whatever they can arrange. Don’t count on much free time until you’re well into your 40′s. Seriously.
- do they get vacation benefits or health insurance benefits?
Depends on the work situation. In general, if you don’t work, you don’t get paid, so every vacation day is a day without income (but expenses are still there, so it’s a money-losing day). In private practice, you buy your own “benefits”. And you get to pay extra taxes.
Medicine (any specialty) is hard work with long hours.
