Is it a HIPAA violation if a pharmacy leaves a customer’s personal file on their counter?
An unnamed pharmacy left my children’s file out on their counter where other customers can view them. I found this out because a friend happened to go to the pharmacy counter to pick up their medication and saw my children’s records sitting there unattended. The friend told me that there were several sheets of paper with lots of information on it and even showed our previous address, their names, our current address, phone number, etc. My friend told me this information and I immediately called the pharmacy to ask if this was accurate. I told the pharmacist that
I work with HIPAA stuff every day. That sounds like a HIPAA violation for sure.
