When signing a HIPAA release….?
Is it a requirement that SPECIFIC people be added onto the form to discuss and receive PHI? Or can it be a vague entity, such as… ” anywheretown public schools” for instance.
You are required to sign a release so that only those people with a “need to know” have access to your information. These people typically include other health care providers, insurance companies and anyone else involved, in ANY WAY, in your medical care. If you are interested in having someone specific, such as a husband, wife, parent or whomever, you would discuss this with your health care provider. In the hospital where I work, a system of codes was developed so that only those family members or friends of the patient could get information from the staff.
In general, the medical/nursing community has taken this HIPPA law and taken its intent totally out of context in so many ways.
