What is the legal punishment for breaking medical confidentiality laws?
A friend of mine was dating a guy. A girl she knew from high school called my friend and left a message saying. “Hey I hear you are dating Cody. Just so you know, my Aunt works at Planned Parenthood and she treated him for an STD.”
The Aunt obviously broke HIPAA. Would would her punishment be if she were caught?
I recently was infected with an STD from being sexually assaulted. I was thinking of going to Planned Parenthood but I am hesitant because of this experience with my friend. Do they not respect HIPAA laws as much as a regular doctor’s office would?
There is no criminal punishment for HIPPA, you would need to file a civil lawsuit seeking damages.
