Hipaa Reference

On a psych unit, can you call a patient by their full name?

Especially if you have two people with the same name? Like John B and John S, versus John Brown and John Smith. And I mean where the other patients can hear it. What about with kids? A reference to HIPAA would be great, all I could find was using the least amount of identifiers, but if the first names are the same, is it okay to use the last name too…

The hospital I work at is very casual in that sense. I introduce myself to the patients by name. Mainly because nobody can pronounce my surname. I call the patients by their names and they call me by mine. If there were two Johns I would call them both John, when discussing things.

I would use surnames when giving out medication to avoid mistakes.

I’ve seen quite a number of patients with the same name bond, and then put the nurses though their paces by playing jokes. “It was John!” “No it wasn’t! It was John!”
