Did they break HIPAA?
It has come to my attention that at my child’s pediatric office a certain staff member has disclosed information about me and my child to an acquaintance of theirs. Information like: my name, child’s name, reason for visit, and insurance coverage were disclosed. Is these enough to get this person fired or in trouble. I feel like my privacy has been violated, especially my child’s. What should I do? Do I just change doctors or report this person?
If this person was directly involved in some way in your care then no it does not break HIPAA.
If this person is not involved in any way in your care then it does break HIPAA regulations.
If you feel that your privacy has been violated and would like to report the incident, visit http://www.hhs.gov/ocr/privacy/ for more information on filing a complaint.
