Does my husband scheduling a Doctor’s appointment for me violate HIPAA?
I have no access to a phone 6am to 6pm while I’m in class, so I can’t call to schedule an appointment. The office will be closed by the time I’m out, so I asked my husband to schedule me an appointment, and the receptionist told him that allowing him to set up an appointment is releasing information covered by HIPAA, and would violate Privacy guidelines.
The receptionist gave you a lame answer and she should know totally better. My guess is the Dr told her tyo do that because there is such a high percentage of no shows among the population of someone making an appointment for someone else. If insurance is involved, they may want that to verify coverage in advance. If she is still a patoot, ask specificaly what aspect of hippa ias in vilation, and then ask for a supervisor.
