Can your school ask your doctor for a diagnosis?
My college asked me for a doctor’s note, which I will happily provide. However, I’m worried that they will call and ask for my diagnosis/prognosis, which I would rather remain private. Does HIPAA allow my school to call the office and confirm a diagnosis, ask for a diagnosis, or even speak to my doctor directly? If I told my school it was one thing when it was really another, will they discover it when they call the office?
HIPAA protects you to a degree. If the treatment/diagnosis is deemed a threat to others at your school, your doctor my be required to discuss details. You can call the doctor’s office or talk to them when you get the note and ask them what they will do if your school calls. Many providers require written permission for disclosure to a third party.
