Did the receptionist break patient confidentiality at my doctor’s offce?
When scheduling an emergency appointment with my doctor, the receptionist was very rude and then said “What’s wrong with you?” I was taken aback but I still told her that I was having severe side effects to a medication. Then she put my on hold and another receptionist got on the phone and asked the same question, even more rudely “What’s WRONG with you?” I told her the same and then the two of them pulled my patient chart and read it, and then ask me why all of a sudden i was having side effects to a medication I started taking two weeks ago. They said I was fine and that an appointment in two weeks was all they could do.
Do they have the right to read it for THIS purpose? I know that they usually document phone calls, appointments, etc. But to actually read my medication list and pretend to be doctors?
I’m outraged and I already sent a complaint to HIPAA, but I wanted to know what everyone else thought.
I don’t believe they broke confidentiality since they are authorized staff, however this behavior was totally inappropriate and you need to make sure the situation gets rectified professionally.
How stupid. Why wouldn’t you be having side effects 2 weeks into a new drug? dumb bitches.
They should have taken the message, given it to your nurse to discuss with the doctor, and then one of the licensed medical professionals should have called you back. That’s what every doc I’ve ever known does.
