Would a medical marijuana card have an effect on my furture nursing liscense? ?
I am a student nurse(lvn/lpn). I live in California and I’m going to take my board exam in about 8 months. my doctor just recommended me to get a medical marijuana card because of my severe chronic back pain and insomnia. I know that before I take the board exam they do some kind of background check. Would the board of nursing exempt me from taking the exam just because I have a medical marijuana card? Does HIPAA cover it? Please help. Thank you!!
I don’t see why you would have a problem if your doctor has recommended it, and your doctor can back up the reasoning behind having this issued to you. I wouldn’t wait until the time that you were going to take your board examination to ask about this. I would talk with your doctor and ask them to give you a letter on their letterhead, or on a prescription, and then go and talk with the nursing board, and ask them about it. Tell them that if they have any questions, that they should call your doctor,and talk to them about this.
If you have had no drug dependancy habits i.e. marijauna, heroin, cocaine etc. in the past, then I don’t think that this will influence the decision. They may limit you from being able to push narcotics i.e. morphine, demerol etc., but I don’t think that they would refuse you.
