Is giving information about dental appointments violation?

I work in a dental office and we have a disagreement. Does anyone here know if it is a violation of Hipaa to disclose to someone other than the patient that the patient has an appointment? Our receptitionst will tell the spouse or other family members about appointment dates and time or will leave this information on a voice mail. Is this in violation? Thanks for any help

To convince the people in your office, you will need more than “someone on Yahoo” told me. Suggest you go to this website and download a copy of the regulations. Then discuss this practice at work.

There is a lot of misconceptions over HIPPA. And some businesses were panicing becasue of what can happen to them for letting things out.

I agree with you. Since a voice message on a house phone can be heard by anyone.

I used to work at Corrections and we needed to know the medical condition, health care needs, etc when we were selecting which prison to move an inmate to. This was something that had been done ever since Corrections started. After HIPPA we got into an argument that we could no longer use medical information (which was in our computer system as a code – like MS – the inmate had MS) to determine which prison an inmate was sent to. Even though I pointed out that HIPPA states we were specially excluded if it posed a risk to our operation – and in this case it did – both to the inmates and to the guards. I was told to stop producing the reports – because they could be laying on someone’s desk and someone not authorized to see HIPPA information might see that report. It was a stupid decision. It was said that our employees could look up the inmates information in the computer system.
