Is broadcasting certain info over an emergency radio a violation of HIPAA Law?
Is identifying information such as addresses and complaints being broadcast over an emergency radio a violation of HIPAA law? My husband is a volunteer fireman. We live in a different county from where he volunteers. He often listens to his radio when at home or out in public. In fact, he is able to tune his radio in to other frequencies (our county) and listen to whats going on in our county also. The problem is I, along with others, can hear addresses, descriptions of individuals, and their complaints being broadcast over the radio. Is the broadcasting of this information a violation of HIPAA law or is it a violation for him to have the radio where other uninvolved individuals can hear the information?
It is not probably not a violation of HIPAA, but it may be a violation of your county policy, if the radio is audible in public and your husband is not on duty.
