My wife is 12 weeks pregnant. Her COBRA insurance will expire in July (@ 7 mos. pregnant). What do we do?
My COBRA insurance also expires in July, so that is not an option either. Will my wife be able to get a new policy, in which the pregnancy and hospital bills will be covered? According to HIPAA, pregnancy can’t be considered a pre-existing condition (although some answers on yahoo say otherwise).
Unfortunately your timing isn’t good as you shouldn’t have been on the COBRA during the pregnancy, so I’m assuming this wasn’t planned (but congratulations nonetheless). As Zarnev states if you get a job you SHOULD be fine to carry the coverage over. However, individual plans won’t cover you simply because you’re a guaranteed loss for the insurance company. And, nobody goes into a guaranteed losing proposition if they can help it.
If you go to an individual HIPAA plan be prepared to pay a hefty sum for it. It also depends on what state you live in as in mine you’d have no trouble getting her on the state plan which is relatively cheap (and certainly cheaper than paying out of pocket).
