My evil mother-in-law breaking HIPAA law.?

I found out my not-so-lovely mother-in-law has been reading in my medical chart/records. Everytime someone goes into your chart, it’ll post their name in it and what time/day (it’s computerized). We both work for the same hospital. We are allowed to look into our own charts only. I just discovered she has been into mine almost weekly for the past 3 years. What should I do? This woman is crazy so I don’t want to get on her ugly side… (neither does Hubby). But I also feel very violated and she knows all about my health now. Every test and lab work I’ve had done. Plus other documents. UGH!!!! She makes me mad!!!

Report her to your supervisor. Your employer can see who is accessing medical charts. They could discover this on a random check or they could investigate unwarranted frequent access to patient charts. If your chart is stamped with her ID and there is no reason for her to look at it, it is a violation of HIPPA and she can be reprimanded or fired. The IT department at your work may be able to put a block on your chart to protect you. Her supervisor may find more work for her, since she has so much time on her hands. :)
