Am I protected by HIPAA laws if a police officer called to respond to an accident at my home tells others?
An accident happened at my house and 911 was called. I heard today that the police who came to my home have told other officers what happened at my home. This was a health related issue regarding myself and the officers have told local people my health business. Am I protected by HIPAA laws regarding this?
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act only covers people and companies in the health care industry. Police are definitely not covered entities under HIPAA. However, you may have recourse under some regulation that does apply to police conduct.
