HIPAA: What are nurses allowed to tell police?
Is there a national policy about what nurses are obligated to tell police, especially after a patient is already discharged. What do you do if a patient wants to see their medical chart while they are still in the hospital? There are so many gray areas.
I certainly don’t have time in my shift to sit down with a patient while they look through a whole chart.
if the patient is discharged you refer them to medical records,
if the patient is in the hospital you refer them to your supervisor
if they want to see their medical chart, sit them down at the nurses station and let them do so….they own it, it is their property
Does this clear it up for you?
