Hospital Hipaa Policy

Question about patient privacy and using EPIC, HIPAA policies?

ok so I work in a hospital and I’m a prenursing major. When I’m doing letters for doctors I go into the charts in EPIC and get info that I need to do my Job. I am very curious and always wanting to learn about medications and diseases, etc. I am afraid that I have made a mistake though. I often times Search random names and just look at the chart. I will write down conditions or medications that I am not familiar with and research them on my own time. I am now worried that this looks suspicious and could get me in trouble. I would NEVER, and I mean NEVER share anyones personal info or look into any of my family member’s charts or anything like that. Is my curiosity to learn new things going to get me in trouble? Have I gone against HIPAA policy?
Thank you. I am afraid and I don’t want to lose my job.

Yes, you are breaking the HIPPA laws if you are looking at charts that you are not assigned to look at. As your first contributor said cease and desist now before anyone finds out and you get fired. If anyone finds out and reports you, you will be fired. If you are curious look in old medical books and look up new things on the computer but never touch a file of a patient not in your care.
