Pregnant and health insurance?

We are currently stuck in a group insurance with my husband company. A few months ago we discovered the plan we got stuck with sucks. When we tried to get out of it we were told that we couldn’t. They told my husband that the only way we could leave is if there was a life changing event (new job, major health condition, pregnancy).

Well, I found out saturday that I’m pregnant. My husband calls his the group insurance. They say we can’t upgrade or change insurance till after the baby is born.

I have been reading some articles online that makes it seem like they can’t pull this on us.http://www.idfpr.com/DOI/HealthInsurance/HIPAA_preexisting_cond.asp . Please tell me I’m reading this right?
Thank-you everyone.

You are only able to change your insurance during open enrollment or with a life changing event. Life changing events are Marriage, Divorce, Death, Termination of Service of your spouse (loss of their employer sponsored coverage), birth or adoption of a baby.

I didn’t read anything in the link you posted that said otherwise, is there a specific area that you are referring to?

Pregnancy is not considered a life changing event (tell that anyone who has been pregnant, huh!?) Not until the baby is actually born. Major health condition is also not considered a life changing event. However, depending on when open enrollment is held, you will probably be able to change insurance before the baby is born. They are required to have open enrollment on an annual basis. For most companies that is in November/December, but some run July to June.

Congratulations on your pregnancy and best of luck!
