Is it a violation of HIPAA laws to print documentation on a public accessible printer?
There is a computer lab that is used by a department that primarily does documentation of its activities for medical purposes out of this lab. This lab is considered public and at any point in time someone can come into this room and print off. There is no monitoring to insuring that the appropriate person picks up their own documentation. This is a concern and I would like any verification of what violations this might be breaking in the HIPAA code.
yes this is against HIPAA rules. I worked for a medical records management company once. Our warehouse was very secure. I had to be background checked and sign privacy agreements just to make copies of medical records. Our warehouse had temperature and humidity sensors to keep the documents safe. And onle one person could have the file at once. for example if I pulled the record from the warehouse only I could see it, I couldnt give it to anyone to review. If someone wanted it I had to go put it back in the warehouse and then they had to go pull the file. So I would say randomly printing peoples private medical records on a public printer is VERY ILLEGAL. Unless of course every single patient has submitted a right to release form that included anybody who might walk in and see their private medical records. My company OWNED the medical records (the company had a lot of hospitals all over the country) and the patients had to even give us right to release forms for even US to look at the records.
