Can a doctor charge you for your medical records?
Can a dentist bill you if you want to pick up your records to get a 2nd opinion on something? I know that you have access to your records via HIPAA, but I’m not sure if they’re allowed to make you pay to get your own medical history. Please let me know if you have any specific lines in the HIPAA legislation. Thank you.
A doctor will only give you a copy of your records, they must keep the original. They can charge you for them. It takes time and materials to make the copies, so they need to be reimbursed.
I don’t believe that HIPAA deals with this. I know that we have charged for copies of patient’s records in every doctor’s office that I have worked in.
