OSHA or HIPAA Compliance Certification / Medical Records & ROI Law?

I’m looking to become trained in HIPAA compliance for the doctor’s office where I work, I’m also the custodian of medical records and work with all release of information. Does anyone know of the best source of training and certification for HIPAA? Is HIPAA more comprehensive than OSHA, or do they regulate different arenas entirely?

Also for anyone who is certified, does HIPAA cover medical records & release of information law?

HIPAA and OSHA regulate two totally different things. OSHA applies to work place safety and under this regulation you are reguired to maintain safety programs for your employees including keeping records on specific incident which are then reported to your state office. There are some OSHA certifications that can be obtained. OSHA has a lot of information on their website. that can help you. People that work with OSHA also a lot of the time work with Workers’ Compensation which is the employee provided insurance to cover injuries when an employee gets injured on the job. It covers health benefits as well a pays the employee while they are unalbe to work. You can become a certified workers compensation professional (CWCP). HIPAA is an extremely broad law that covers many things other than just privacy and security of patient information. However, in your position you probably deal with only the Privacy, maybe the electronic security, the transaction and code sets used for billing, the unique national provider identifier (NPI) for billing. There is no such thing as HIPAA certification at this time. . IF anyone is trying to sell you on this you would just be wasting your money. There are different organizations that certify you in some of the other areas. If you work with coding you can get coding certifications through AHIMA (american health information management association). IF you work with privacy and securityyou can get certification through AHIMA (chps) but it takes various educational steps to get to where you can even take the test. You can also get various security certifications such as a CISSP, etc.
