How does HIPAA serve to protect patient rights?

HIPAA is all about confidentiality in health care. People in health care have to be very careful with patient information. No information that can be used to identify the patient can be released to anyone who doesn’t need to know it. This information is called Protected Health Information (PHI), and it basically encompasses all medical records and and payment records.

Patients may sign forms to have their records released to certain organizations or people, so the idea is to put patients in control of their own privacy.

PHI may be released without the patient’s permission in certain circumstances, such as suspected child abuse.
