is it autimatic firing if you look up a chart and not use the info for anything?
I found out some info on my ex husbands new live in gf from a bunch of co-workers and other people associated with ex. I started getting concerned due to the fact that she lives and takes care of my 2 daughters 3 days a week. I made the stupid mistake of looking up her chart at my job. I did it once and once only. I never told anyone about what I found. I only looked it up to find out if what I was being told was true and to keep an eye on my children. A friend told me that this gf used to have meth problem. I said something to ex and he automatically thought I got it from her medical past. He is having me investigated for a HIPAA violation. I have a meeting with my director next week. I expect that I am being fired. I have worked there for 9 yrs with no prior write ups. I never disclosed the info to anyone or used it in any way. I found out this info from other people associated with her and him. Is this still immediate termination even though I never disclosed the info?
Just because you could have, doesn’t mean you should have is always the best test and you violated that.
Yes, you violated HIPPA without a legal reason to do so; obvious reason for outright termination to protect the place where you previously were employed to prove that was not a standard practice, just the meandering of rogue employee.
