sarbanes oxley resumes
will knowing SOX inside out benefit me a prospective accountant?
im currently an undergrad and am reading up on SOX. I was wondering if researching the sarbanes-oxley act and becoming familiar and more knowledgable will benefit me by say putting it on a resume or speaking thoroughly about it during an interview. I’m sure this will impress employers, but say, well enough to compensate for a mediocre GPA? thanks for any advice!
It is not so much knowing Sox, it is knowing GAAP, which Sox is regulating. I would recommend that you get a tutoring job. Why? If you are in a position where you have to teach the basics of accounting, you will master the info better. Also, take the time to go through your texts and answer the questions in the back of the chapter, that will reinforce your knowledge.
That being said, I never received an Accounting quiz during an interview. How strange would that be? If you understand the concepts, the objective of Sox and GAAP, you will be in good shape. Your overall attitude during the interview will provide greater benefit. I always say, I would rather hire someone with a good attitude than someone with experience with a bad attitude. Why? I can train the good attitude, a negative personality does not change without desire from within.
Also, there are opportunities in SOX consultations/audits. Especially with this mortgage meltdown and the problems in the stock market. Accounting is one of the fastest growing fields. So with your desire to do well and learn about your job, you should do well.
