Does my “HIPAA” health care notice serve as a “waiver” of sorts for a pre-existing condition?
I have just lost my COBRA health insurance coverage. As a part of the process of loosing my health care, a standard HIPAA form was recently sent to me. I am confused as to the purpose of this notice.
I have a pre-existing health condition; when I attempt to apply for new private health insurance, could the fact of the existence of this form enable a new insurer to take me in despite the problem, whereas without this form I would not be covered for this pre-existing condition?
I have less than 63 days (for some reason) to use this notice. Can someone please explain what this HIPAA notice is used for, and am I correct in concluding this might help me find insurance despite the condition?

HIPAA doesn’t mean that you will not be turned down for a policy. It means you will not be turned down for a HIPAA policy. Most of the major companies have these policies, which are not the same as most people get. Your choices are usually limited to one plan and one or two deductibles. Premium will depend upon the company and your location but in my state they run from over $1000 per month to nearly $3000 per month. Rules and regulations stipulate the 63 days.
Because of the cost of HIPAA policies, you’ll need to contact a local agent that works with all of the major companies first. The agent can work with you to see if you would be eligible for a regular individual policy and on what terms. Depending on your condition, even if they put a rider on that condition for a period of time you may be better off with the individual policy.
